AJC PolitiFact gets it wrong on Jones

July 1, 2010

PolitiFact Georgia | Jones says he helped turn “trash into cash.”.

After reading this article by Eric Stirgus of the AJC, I have to wonder how they could rate this as mostly true. It seems to me that the statement is true, period. If you are not familiar with PolitiFact, it is a series where the AJC fact checks statements by various people. They give them a rating of true, mostly true, half true, barely true, false, and Pants on Fire (liar liar). Vernon already has a pants on fire rating for a statement he made about transit and Hank Johnson. This one though seems a bit off base. Here is the statement they were analyzing –

“I have a record on the environment of creating green energy by capturing methane gas at our landfills and selling it to Georgia Power and they in return selling it back as green energy — taking trash and turning it into cash,

So what is the problem with this statement. They almost admitted that the program was making money with this statement:

And how much has DeKalb collected from the program? Walton said $3.9 million thus far. DeKalb projects it will collect nearly $1.1 million this year and slightly more in 2011.

So let me get this straight, the county has made 3.9 mil so far will grab another 1.1 mil this year and more than 1 million next year. If my math is correct, that is nearly Six million dollars. The entire cost of of the facility, excluding maintenance,  has been covered in 4 years. If it continues at this pace, it will be a money maker in the next couple of years, maintenance included. Sorry AJC, but me smells some bias.

BTW, this is no way in support of the Jones campaign, just wanted to give credit where credit is due.

Finally, someone who gets it!!! How can a statement be mostly true anyway, either the person did as they said or they didn’t – plain and simple. I also think it is important to understand those individuals behind the Politifact Georgia information as well, those like Eric Sturgis and Jim Tharpe, both long time reporters of the AJC.

AJC obviously doesn’t care for Vernon’s insistence to follow his on mind, and not follow the democratic party’s line. This has been the case for years. Respect is due: Vernon Jones has done excellent service to DeKalb County.

    Dear South DeKalb,
You are correct. I also smell some bias in the AJC’s reporting not just on this issue but almost EVERY issue (but that’s another story). Thanks for taking the time to acknowledge and clarify this accomplishment. It’s good to see someone at least being fair when it comes to Vernon for a change.

I have known Vernon Jones for 3 years and onorthodox though his approach maybe, when you sit down and have a talk with him about policies, the state of the economy, when look at his record, you realize that he is a very smart man – like David said love him or hate him he gets the job done. Our country including the 4th district can’t afford to send pansies to Washington. Whoever we choose to send to Congress, should be fearless, passionate, have a good heart for people, be hardworking and motivated to get results. Vernon Jones has done way more good for DeKalb county in 8 years than bad. I believe he’ll do more good for the 4th District as well. Vote Vernon Jones on July 20th ya’ll!

In reviewing Vernon Jones’ record of accomplishments, I have made my decision. Love him or hate him he gets the job done. This is just one of many projects that’s generating money for the county and that’s what this county needs more revenue to keep it afloat. On July 20th, I will cast my vote for Vernon Jones.

South dekalb I know you haven’t decided about Vernon yet! However, if you step to the side and look at it for what it is, you can’t deny he has been the best chief executive in the entire metro area since Maynard. Now you can see clearly even when vernon’s record of accomplishments is clear and obvious, the ajc can’t take or accept it. I believe Vernon doesn’t have your support because that’s what the ajc has been doing since Vernon was elected CEO…assasinating his character! Wake up south dekalb and start speaking out on Vernon behalf. Don’t let them sell you on Willie lynch’s letter. Just watch how they treat sliz Carter! No experience, no substance, lies, lies pants on fire, but will paint her to be the great hope!

It’s interesting to hear you say this is a clear cut bias report from the ajc on Vernon Jones. Isn’t this something he always sid the ajc was doing towards him and we said he was paranoid? Jones was always right about the ajc. They systimaticly villified him to keep him from higher office. And why? Vernon won’t buy into their liberal views. He won’t be enslaved by them!
